Limiting peak demand with IF-THEN rules on a power meter concentrator
How demand is measured, how to build staged load-shedding rules on a PMC or PMD concentrator, and a worked example with relay outputs.
Power meters, current transformers and concentrators for sub-metering, load monitoring and energy reporting.
Energy management starts with measurement. To see where energy is used, compare consumption over time or document savings, you need meters on the relevant circuits and a way to collect their data. ICP DAS supplies both: single-phase and three-phase power meters with current transformers (CTs), and concentrators that read many meters and pass the data on to SCADA, databases or cloud platforms.
The PM series power meters measure voltage, current, power, power factor and energy on single-phase and three-phase circuits. Many models are supplied with matching current transformers, sized from small branch circuits to several hundred amperes. The meters communicate over Modbus RTU, with Modbus TCP and other interfaces on selected models, so any controller, BMS or SCADA system that supports these protocols can read them.
A concentrator polls a group of meters and makes their data available in one place. The PMC series, and the PMD series with a built-in touch panel, collect data from ICP DAS meters, log it to a memory card and pass it on over Modbus TCP, MQTT, SNMP or FTP, depending on the model. Built-in IF-THEN-ELSE rules can switch loads off when demand approaches a limit. That gives a compact energy monitoring system without a separate server, or a clean data source for an existing SCADA.
Where cabling to every meter is impractical, iWSN wireless current sensing modules report to a concentrator over a wireless sensor network. For temporary measurements, a portable power monitoring kit packs the metering hardware into a carrying case.
To measure high voltages and currents with standard analog input modules, voltage attenuators and current transformers from the DNM-800 range convert the signals to levels the I/O can read safely.
Three-phase PM series meters with current transformers are fitted on the main incomer and on the feeders to each production line. A PMC concentrator reads them over RS-485, logs the values locally and sends them by MQTT to the energy reporting system. If the connection fails, the log on the memory card is sent once it is restored, so no data is lost.
We can help size meters and current transformers from a single-line diagram or a list of circuits.
The DGW-521 CR is a DIN-rail gateway that lets a host PC, PAC or TouchPAD control DALI lighting devices over serial or USB. It accepts Modbus RTU and DCON from RS-232, RS-485 or USB and translates them to DALI, so existing serial-based control software can address a DALI lighting network without a separate DALI controller.A built-in DALI power supply (16 VDC ±5%, maximum 250 mA) can be switched on or off, which suits installations where the DALI bus is already powered elsewhere. The ID code can be set over the RS-485 interface, which simplifies commissioning. DALI isolation is rated at 1500 VDC.The gateway is intended for DALI lighting systems covering small areas. DALI signal cables must not exceed 300 m. The unit carries CE, UKCA, FCC, RoHS and WEEE marks. The USB driver is listed for Windows XP and Windows 7 only.ApplicationsLighting control for small DALI installationsHost PC, PAC or TouchPAD access to DALI devicesSerial-to-DALI integration in building automation
DN-831I-100V-1000A conditions one high voltage input and one high current input so that standard analogue input modules can measure them. Inputs of ±100 V and ±1000 A are linearly attenuated to ±10 V outputs, letting engineers use common ±10 V channels for high-level measurements.Isolation is a key consideration in this kind of front end. The module provides 3000 VDC isolation between modules and between channels, which helps to reduce noise coupling from the inputs to the outputs and between channels. The high input impedance and easy wiring make it straightforward to integrate into existing DIN-rail installations. This ordering code includes the CA-040415-1 cable and the ASO-0024 current transformer. The clip-type current transformer has a Φ40.5 mm inside diameter and a 1.5 m leading cable. The module is powered from +10 VDC to +30 VDC, consumes 1.8 W and operates from -25 ~ +75 °C.ApplicationsHigh-current measurement using analogue input modulesHigh-voltage AC/DC voltage measurement with ±10 V analogue inputs
DN-831I-100V-2000A is a DIN-rail signal conditioning module with one voltage attenuator and one current transformer channel. It scales a ±100 V input and a ±2000 A input to ±10 V outputs, so high voltage and high current can be measured with standard ±10 V analog input modules. The module provides 3000 VDC isolation between the modules and between channels, which keeps noise from passing between inputs and outputs or from one channel to the other. The attenuation ratio is linear and the input impedance is high, so the measured signal is not loaded noticeably by the conditioner. This CR ordering code includes the CA-040415-1 cable and the ASO-0025 clip-type current transformer with a 40.5 mm inside diameter. Compatible analog input examples named in the source include the I-7017, I-87017, M-7017RMS and I-87017W-RMS.ApplicationsHigh voltage and high current measurement with analog input modulesElectrical monitoring in industrial control cabinets
DN-831I-100V-200A is a DIN-rail signal conditioner that brings one high-voltage and one high-current measurement point down to levels that standard analog input modules can read. The voltage channel attenuates ±100 V to ±10 V, and the current channel uses a clip-on transformer rated for ±200 A, also scaled to ±10 V.Each channel is galvanically isolated, with 3000 VDC between modules and 3000 VDC channel to channel, which helps keep noise from the high-voltage side out of the measurement chain. The high input impedance and linear attenuation ratio make the output straightforward to scale in software. The clip-on current transformer has a Φ21 mm aperture and a 1.5 m lead. The unit is powered from 10 to 30 VDC, draws 1.8 W, and is housed in plastic for DIN-rail mounting. It is specified for operation from -25 to +75 °C and carries CE, UKCA, FCC, RoHS and WEEE marks.ApplicationsHigh-current measurement using analog input modulesHigh-voltage signal monitoring with analog input modules
