The VEX-144i CR adds four RS-422/485 serial ports to a PC through a short PCI Express x1 card. Each port can be set to RS-485 for half-duplex or RS-422 for full-duplex operation, with baud rates from 50 to 115200 bps, so it suits engineers connecting several field devices to one computer.
The i version isolates the data lines of each port with photocouplers rated at 2500 VDC, which helps break ground loops and limits the effect of common mode voltages and voltage spikes. On-board ESD protection rated at ±4 kV diverts static discharge away from sensitive circuitry, protecting the computer and attached equipment in harsh environments.
COM port numbers can be assigned manually using the 8-bit DIP switch of the built-in COM-Selector, or left to the driver to pick an available number automatically. Each port has a 128-byte hardware FIFO, and the driver provides up to 128 KB of software buffer per COM port under Windows, which is useful for large file transfers. The card includes one CA-4002 connector with a female DB-37 interface.
