The I-2542-A25 is a single-strand fibre converter that extends an RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 serial link over one single-mode fibre for up to 25 km. Wavelength Division Multiplexing lets two independent data channels share one fibre, with transmit at 1310 nm and receive at 1550 nm, so an existing single-mode line can carry bidirectional serial traffic without laying new cable.
Automatic RS-485 direction control removes the need to manage transmit enable signals in the host, and ESD protection on the serial data line helps the unit withstand electrostatic discharge at the connection point. The fibre path is designed to avoid problems from lightning strikes and EMI/RFI interference, which suits serial runs that cross noisy plant or long outdoor routes.
The unit mounts on a DIN rail and runs from a +10 VDC to +30 VDC supply, drawing 2 W. It supports baud rates from 1200 to 115200 bps and operates between -25 and +75 °C. The source notes that the I-2542-A25 and I-2542-B25 form a pair, so both ends of a WDM link must be matched accordingly.
